Working ergonomically with the smartphone

26. April 2023 | CONEDU
Smartphones should be used consciously to promote one's health.

The smartphone is an important part of our digital everyday life, but can lead to physical overload due to an unbalanced posture. Conscious use of the smartphone is important to protect health and well-being. To avoid strain on the cervical spine, the smartphone should be held at eye level if possible. Smartphone users can prevent a so-called mobile phone neck by varying their posture while using their smartphone. All it takes is to stretch the arms occasionally, change the sitting position or take the device in the other hand from time to time.

In order to prevent overstraining the fingers and elbows, loosening exercises are recommended in addition to regular typing breaks. Typing with both hands also prevents damage to the fingers, especially the thumb. In addition, the use of headphones and hands-free devices ensures a natural posture during a phone call.

Eyes can also be protected while using a smartphone by taking regular breaks from the screen. Sending voice messages instead of text messages can also relieve eye strain. Basically, working at a screen, whether smartphone, tablet, laptop or computer, requires conscious health protection. You can also read tips on the healthy design of a computer workstation here.
