With navigation apps (“app” is short for “application”) you can determine your own current location on the map and thus orientate yourself even in foreign environments. You can also find the fastest route to a desired destination and have the app navigate you there. Inconvenient map reading is no longer necessary. Some online navigation apps even warn you about increased traffic volumes and suggest alternative routes. Furthermore, with some apps you can choose which roads you would like to use or avoid. For example, it is possible to exclude toll roads from your route. 

When travelling abroad, it is best to use navigation apps that work offline too, because using the internet may cause high costs and the network might not be available everywhere.
