Viral - what does it mean?

27. September 2023 | CONEDU
Find out what it means when content spreads as quickly as a virus.

"Viral" refers to the rapid and widespread distribution of content on the internet, similar to the way a virus spreads. When something goes viral, it means that it is seen, discussed and shared by many people in a short period of time. Viral content can spread through social media, email forwards or other online channels. The virality of a post depends on how much its content attracts people's attention and interest - and it carries some risks.

Content has a higher chance of going viral if it evokes strong emotions, is unique, humorous and relates to relevant or current topics. One example of viral content is #MeToo. The campaign against sexual harassment and assault went viral in 2017. Another example is a video clip of footballer Erling Haaland from 2021, which was shared thousands of times in a short period of time and sparked heated discussions about its authenticity.

In an age of rapid information dissemination, there is a risk of false or misleading content going viral. It is therefore important to critically evaluate and interpret data, information and digital content before sharing or believing it. Read more about how to reveal fake news on the web.
